New Providence Wharf
New Providence Wharf is a modern residential development on the Thames riverfront in Tower Hamlets with over 500 homes spread across several tall buildings including the Ontario Tower with 31 floors and the Providence Tower with 43 floors. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the development covers about 3.3 hectares along Fairmont Avenue and Yabsley Street, also containing the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, shops, a gym, and a riverside park.
Construction of this development began in phases from 2005 to create a modern riverfront neighborhood near Canary Wharf. Following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, safety concerns emerged about its flammable ACM cladding material, leading to costly renovation requirements for residents.
This development is near Canary Wharf with strong public transport links including tube and rail, making it easy to travel around London. The riverside park and nearby shops and restaurants offer convenient options for walking and exploring the neighborhood.
Two significant fires occurred in the complex buildings: one in May 2021 in Block A-E on the eighth floor that spread through wooden decking, and another in August 2024 in Charrington Tower. These events exposed critical gaps in the buildings' fire safety systems.
