Spanish Riding School
The Spanish Riding School is an equestrian facility and tourist attraction in Vienna's inner city within the Hofburg Palace complex. The main arena is a Baroque riding hall built in 1735 featuring tall windows, mirrors, and gilded details, where Lipizzaner horses train daily and perform in shows.
The school was founded to train young noblemen in classical horsemanship and prepare horses for royal occasions. Over centuries, its purpose shifted toward preserving this high art of riding, and since 2015 the school's heritage has been recognized as Unesco cultural heritage.
The school takes its name from the classical riding tradition that originated in Spain and still shapes daily life here. Visitors see this heritage in action: riders in historical uniforms work with their horses each day, grooms lead the animals through courtyards, and a sense of respect for this centuries-old craft is visible in every corner.
Visitors can watch morning training sessions or performances most days but should buy tickets in advance as spaces are limited. Guided tours through the stables and building are available, and free views of the horses are possible by watching the courtyards or walking nearby to the Burggarten park.
The nearby Piber Stud breeds and raises the white Lipizzaner horses before they come to the school, connecting the entire tradition from birth to performance. This breeding operation is protected by Unesco and shows how these special horses have been carefully selected and trained across generations.
