Power on Land, Monumental fountain at Michaelerplatz, Innere Stadt, Austria.
Power on Land is a monumental fountain at Michaelerplatz featuring a central nude figure holding a sword. The work combines Laas marble and Uddevalla red granite with additional figures arranged throughout its sculptural composition.
The fountain was created in 1897 by Edmund von Hellmer as part of the architectural ensemble flanking the semicircular Michaeler Wing of the Hofburg Palace complex. It marks an important work of that period's urban development and palace expansion.
The fountain displays Austrian power over land through its sculptural composition and forms a thematic pair with the companion piece across the plaza. Together, these two works convey control over territory and commerce as seen in their opposing designs.
The fountain stands on the central Michaelerplatz and is easy to reach on foot from central Vienna. Multiple transportation connections and main tourist routes run nearby, making it simple to include in a walking tour.
Between 2001 and 2003, restorers used historical photographs and plaster models to repair water damage and reconstruct missing sections. This careful work allowed the fountain to be returned to its earlier appearance.
