The Boatyard Grill
The Boatyard Grill is an American restaurant in Ward 1 beside Cayuga Lake, marked by large windows overlooking the water. The building offers a variety of American dishes including chicken pasta, grilled chicken with mashed sweet potatoes, steaks, and seafood like shrimp and lobster, prepared on a wood-fired grill.
The site was formerly a scrapyard littered with abandoned boats, motors, and fuel drums that made it unsafe. The restaurant opened in January 2001 following cleanup efforts by local workers and government, transforming a hazardous location into a gathering place for the community.
The restaurant's name reflects the site's past as a working waterfront area. Large windows frame views of daily water activity and local rowing practice, allowing visitors to observe how the community uses the lake as part of its ordinary routine.
The restaurant does not accept reservations, so visitors must call on their preferred day to join a wait list. While waiting for a table, guests can enjoy a drink at the bar or sit on the lawn to take in the lake view.
The building stands on a site that was once marred by a troubled past but was transformed through collaboration between locals and government into a valued destination. This transformation serves as a reminder of a community's ability to reclaim and repurpose neglected spaces.
