The founder opened this place in 1978, inspired by a region described in an old Indian text. The project aimed from the start to keep rural traditions alive and thriving.
The name comes from an old Indian text meaning "shelter". Diners sit on the floor and eat from leaves, which is a traditional way of sharing food while respecting the environment.
It is best to visit during daytime when light fills the sprawling gardens and courtyards. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds invite exploration and the floor seating during meals requires ease of movement.
An attached museum displays a collection of traditional kitchen utensils that the founder gathered, each telling a story about how food was prepared across different regions. These objects span generations and ways of cooking.
