Surly Brewing Co., Craft brewery and restaurant in Prospect Park, Minneapolis, US
Surly Brewing Co. is a craft brewery and restaurant in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. The building has a two-story indoor beer hall with wood and steel finishes, an outdoor patio, and working production tanks visible from parts of the dining area.
The founder began homebrewing in 1994 and later trained at established breweries before launching Surly in 2005 out of a smaller facility. The current Prospect Park location opened afterward to accommodate growth in production and visitors.
Surly is closely tied to a 2011 change in Minnesota law that let breweries sell beer directly to visitors on-site, something that was not allowed before. That shift helped shape a new culture of local brewing across the state, and Surly was at the center of it.
The entrance is on Malcolm Avenue near University Avenue, and the spot is reachable by bus or bike along the nearby transit corridor. Inside, it is worth checking both floors of the beer hall since the upper level offers a different view over the brewing floor.
The campaign to change the 2011 law was driven largely by Surly's own fans, and the resulting legislation became known informally as the Surly Bill in local circles. The name stuck and is still used when people talk about craft brewing history in Minnesota.
