Kropf, Traditional restaurant in Old Town, Switzerland
Zum Kropf is a restaurant in Zurich's Old Town that serves classic Zurich dishes across three separate dining areas. The rooms feature Baroque mirrors, ornate wall paneling, and a central Corinthian column.
The building dates back to 1444 and was originally a private residence. Architect Friedrich Kronauer transformed it into a restaurant in 1887.
The interior displays oil paintings of rustic drinking scenes and frescoes that reflect Swiss dining traditions. These details create an atmosphere where traditional Swiss hospitality and local table customs come alive.
The restaurant is located at In Gassen 16 in a medieval Old Town alley. The three dining areas can be accessed through different entrances, so look around when you enter the building.
Inside is a 1909 beer and wine lift, built specifically to transport beverages between floors. This mechanical system remains one of the oldest examples of its kind in a Swiss restaurant and still works today.
