Segelschiffrestaurant "Klipper", Ship restaurant in Treptow-Köpenick, Germany
The Klipper sailing ship restaurant is a former Dutch cargo vessel permanently moored along the Spree, offering dining areas across the main deck, ship cabins, and waterfront terraces with water views. The vessel spans 31 meters in length and features masts rising 24 meters high above Berlin's waterways.
The vessel was built in Groningen in 1890 and transported perishable goods to the Frisian Islands over many decades before beginning a new chapter in the early 21st century. Its transformation into a restaurant in 2001 rescued the aging ship from decay and made it a landmark along Berlin's river banks.
The vessel is perceived by visitors as a floating piece of maritime heritage, where the original wooden structure and deck echo its sailing past. The close arrangement of tables throughout the former ship spaces creates an authentic setting that connects to the work of earlier sailors.
The restaurant is accessible by public transport via the S-Bahn stations Treptower Park or Plänterwald, or guests can arrive by private boat using the 24-hour sport boat dock. Visitors should be aware that the ship's areas are tight and low-ceilinged, making comfortable clothing and careful movement advisable.
The former cargo hold of the ship now houses the kitchen where international dishes are prepared, while the old crew quarters have been transformed into an intimate dining room called The Roof. This surprising repurposing of work spaces shows how ships can completely reorganize their inner logic when they leave the water.
