Playa Palancar, Beach club and restaurant on southern coast, Cozumel, Mexico
Playa Palancar is a beach club and restaurant on the southern shore of Cozumel, with coral reefs located just a short swim from the sand. The water near the shore is very shallow and clear, making it easy to see marine life without going far from the beach.
The beach club opened in 2002 along a stretch of coast that had previously been open, undeveloped shoreline. Its arrival marked one of the first steps toward organized tourism on the southern part of the island.
The kitchen works closely with local fishermen who bring in daily catches, so the food on the plate reflects what the sea offers that day. This connection to the coast is felt in the simple, fresh preparations typical of Mexican coastal cooking.
Snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and umbrellas can be rented on site, and guided reef tours run at different times throughout the day. Those who prefer to explore on their own can reach the reef directly from the shore without a guide.
A nearby reef called El Cielo is home to many starfish resting on the sandy bottom at around 10 feet (3 meters) deep. Swimmers can see them clearly from the surface without needing to dive down.
