Sforza Castle in Dozza is a medieval fortress in the hilltop town of Dozza, in the Emilia-Romagna region, now used as a museum of wooden furniture and sculpture. The collection fills several floors of the building and covers pieces from a wide span of Italian history.
The castle was substantially rebuilt in the late 15th century under the Riario-Sforza family, which transformed it from a basic fortified structure into a more solid defensive building. The layout and outer form that visitors see today largely date from that period.
The furniture and carved pieces on display came from donations by local families and show how homes in the region were furnished across different centuries. Moving through the rooms, visitors can see how craftsmanship styles shifted over time, from heavy Renaissance forms to lighter later designs.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and has accessible facilities for visitors with mobility needs. Stone staircases connect the floors, so sturdy footwear makes moving around easier.
One floor of the museum holds a group of wooden sculptures made specifically for visitors with intellectual disabilities, designed to be touched and explored by hand. These objects were developed in collaboration with specialists to offer a different way of experiencing the collection.
