Dozza Castle

Dozza Castle is a medieval fortress in Dozza featuring defensive towers, a deep moat, and protective merlons, substantially modified in the fifteenth century. The structure combines original fortification elements with residential sections added during these extensive renovations.

The fortress was founded in medieval times and underwent major transformation in the sixteenth century when Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggi received it from the Pope. This transfer marked a shift from a purely military structure to a palace-like residence.

The castle houses a regional wine collection from Emilia-Romagna, displaying bottles from local producers in dedicated exhibition spaces. Visitors can explore how wine culture connects to the estate and its former residents.

Visits are possible through guided tours that provide access to dungeons, chambers, and viewpoints, with information available in multiple languages at the entrance. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the various levels and towers involves climbing stairs.

The main hall displays portraits of the Malvezzi family and tapestries bearing their coat of arms from the eighteenth century, offering insight into the family that inhabited the estate for generations. These personal items stand as quiet reminders of the place's past.
