Villa Muggia, Rationalist villa in Imola, Italy.

Villa Muggia is a three-story residence in Imola containing roughly twenty rooms built with concrete and glass that incorporates portions of an eighteenth-century hunting lodge. The structure merges modern materials with older building elements.

Architect Piero Bottoni redesigned the property between 1936 and 1938 for owner Umberto Muggia as a summer residence. It suffered significant damage from bombing raids in 1944.

This residence shows how modern rationalist design can work together with Italian building traditions through its use of materials and spatial arrangement. Visitors can observe these ideas expressed in the concrete and glass construction.

The villa remains inaccessible to visitors today because it suffered serious war damage that has not been restored. It can be viewed from outside if you pass by the location.

A remarkable detail that survives is an elliptical dining table cast as a single piece of concrete and marble aggregate from the original interior. This table shows the craftsmanship that went into the design at the time.
