Shell Island Resort
Shell Island Resort is a hotel on Wrightsville Beach offering oceanfront suites with Atlantic views and accommodations for 153 guests. The property features an indoor heated pool and outdoor pool, a beachfront restaurant and lounge, a large ballroom for events, and fitness facilities.
The location was a popular resort destination in the early 1900s with a large pavilion and cottages. A fire destroyed that original resort in 1926, and after decades of quiet, the area saw new development with houses and eventually the current resort that operates today.
The name Shell Island comes from the abundant shells that wash ashore along the beaches. Today the resort welcomes visitors from many backgrounds and serves as a gathering place where people come to celebrate weddings, family events, and personal milestones.
The resort is just a short walk from parking and nearby hotels, making it easy to access the beach. Arriving early is recommended, especially on summer weekends, since parking spaces are limited and fill up quickly.
The location holds historical significance as a refuge for African Americans in the early 1900s when many other beaches were segregated, with the original resort featuring a large pavilion and music as central to its appeal. This heritage shapes the character of the place as a welcoming destination where people gather.
