New Hanover County Extension Service Arboretum

The New Hanover County Extension Service Arboretum is a botanical garden with over 30 different themed areas, including aquatic, herb, Japanese, and rose sections. Each area displays different types of plants and is designed to show how vegetation grows in this local climate.

The arboretum was founded in 1989 and received many of its original plant specimens from a respected horticulturist at North Carolina State University. This early collection formed the foundation for today's diverse assortment.

The garden functions as a community learning space where visitors see how plants are used for food, beauty, and ecological balance. Staff regularly offer classes and events that teach people about growing things sustainably in this region.

The garden is open daily without entrance fees and visitors can explore the areas on their own or attend guided tours and classes. There is also a Plant Clinic where experts answer questions about plant health and gardening from Monday through Friday.

The garden holds over 4000 different plant varieties from the region and functions as a research site for local species cultivation. This makes it a valuable place to see which plants thrive in this climate.
