The cemetery extends across 65 acres of land with winding paths, mature trees, and thousands of memorials documenting the history of North Carolina.
Established in 1852 by Wilmington businessmen, the cemetery recorded its first burial in 1855 with Annie DeRosset, daughter of the cemetery president.
The cemetery incorporates a Hebrew section added in 1855, representing the presence of Jewish communities in nineteenth-century Wilmington.
The Oakdale Cemetery Company, reachable at 910-762-5682, manages lot sales and cemetery operations while maintaining records of over 21,000 memorials.
The grounds contain graves of individuals who perished during the Yellow Fever epidemics, marking significant public health events in regional history.
