The Grand Trailer Park Taverna
The Grand Trailer Park Taverna is a restaurant and bar in central Melbourne with indoor and covered outdoor seating arranged around vintage Airstreams and picnic tables strung with colored fairy lights. The menu features eight burger varieties with beef, mushroom, or vegetarian options, hand-cut chips, cheese croquettes, milkshakes both with and without alcohol, and classic cocktails on tap.
The location occupies the space formerly used by Happy Palace restaurant. Josh Lefers created the Taverna concept to build an informal gathering spot combining American-style food and drinks with a playful vintage trailer aesthetic inspired by roadside car culture.
The name references American trailer park culture, creating a nostalgic connection to classic campground life. Visitors use the space as an informal gathering place where vintage caravans, colored lights, and relaxed surroundings encourage socializing and lingering over meals and drinks.
Located at the corner of Bourke and Exhibition Streets near Parliament Station, the restaurant opens from lunch through late evening Tuesday to Saturday. Popular items often sell out during peak hours, so arriving early is wise, and takeaway options are available for those wanting to eat elsewhere in the city.
Ornate dragon door handles from the former Happy Palace Chinese restaurant remain visible in the space, serving as remnants of its previous life. These lingering details add layers of history to the rooms and connect the new venture to the building's culinary past.
