Nauru House, Office skyscraper in Melbourne Central Business District, Australia
Nauru House is a 190-meter office tower with 52 floors located on Collins Street in Melbourne's central business district. The building contains 20 elevators to serve its multiple office spaces and occupants.
Nauru purchased the land in 1972 for 19 million dollars using profits from phosphate mining as part of an international investment strategy. The project reflected how Pacific island nations sought to develop assets in major global cities during the 1970s.
The construction required demolition of heritage buildings at Collins Street, reflecting the transformation of Melbourne's architectural landscape during the 1970s.
The exterior aluminum casing was renovated in 1991 to address structural problems including concrete deterioration. This maintenance work helped preserve the building's integrity for long-term use.
Queensland Investment Corporation purchased the building in 2004 for 140 million dollars and renamed it to 80 Collins North Tower. This ownership change marked a shift toward domestic Australian investment in the property.
