House of Nicolaus Copernicus, History museum in Stare Miasto, Poland.
The House of Nicolaus Copernicus is a history museum set in two connected Gothic townhouses in the Old Town of Gdansk. The interior has kept its original wooden beams, fireplaces, and period furnishings, and the collection focuses on astronomical instruments and everyday objects from the 15th century.
The building dates to the 15th century and is where Copernicus was born, when his father worked as a merchant in the thriving port city. After his father died, the family left Gdansk, and the young Copernicus was raised by his uncle before going on to study in Italy and Poland.
The rooms are furnished with objects from the 15th century that show how a prosperous Hanseatic trading family lived and worked in a northern port city. Visitors can see the kind of instruments and books that a scholar of that era would have used in daily life.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and audio guides are available in several languages to help navigate the rooms. The building has a lift, so most levels are accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
Although Copernicus is most often linked to Torun, it is this house in Gdansk that is identified as his actual birthplace, a detail that is still debated among historians. The two cities have long competed over his memory, and the question of where he was truly born remains open.
