Mercado Independencia, Restaurant market in Mexico City, Mexico.
Mercado Independencia is a food market restaurant in Mexico City, housed across two floors of a former residential building in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood. The space brings together over 25 food stalls offering a mix of Mexican and international dishes under one roof.
The building started as a residential house before being converted into a dining space. The renovation kept the original architectural details of the house, such as the staircase and room layouts, visible throughout.
The open kitchens let visitors watch cooks at work, which gives the place a lively, workshop-like feel. Each stall runs independently, so the food and style shift noticeably from one counter to the next.
The market sits just behind the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs building in Colonia Juárez, which makes it easy to find on foot. It stays open later on Thursday through Saturday evenings, so those nights work well for a relaxed dinner.
The ground floor is largely devoted to cafes and bars that focus on mezcal and Mexican spirits, which sets this market apart from a typical food hall. Most of the food stalls, from seafood to burgers, are concentrated on the upper floor.
