Micklethwait Craft Meats
Micklethwait Craft Meats is a barbecue restaurant that evolved from a food truck and now operates from a nearly 100-year-old building in East Austin. The space features an indoor counter area, dining tables, and a large patio shaded by pecan trees, where visitors enjoy slow-smoked meats including brisket, ribs, and house-made sides baked fresh on-site.
The restaurant started as a food truck on Rosewood Avenue before relocating in 2025 to a historic East Austin building that once served as a farm store and church. Owner Tom Micklethwait previously operated a restaurant in Smithville and ran other Austin establishments before opening this permanent location.
The name comes from owner Tom Micklethwait, who has deep roots in Austin's food scene. This spot reflects how locals approach barbecue as a craft, with slow smoking methods passed down through generations.
Visitors should arrive early, especially on weekends, since items sell out later in the day. The restaurant accepts both cash and card payments with a quick-moving line due to its compact size.
The signature chicken al carbon is smoked with post oak and finished over mesquite coals, then served with tortillas and salsa verde like a taco. The Dino Ribs are notably thicker and larger than typical ribs and beloved by locals for becoming fall-off-the-bone tender after slow cooking.
