Villa d'Este
Villa d'Este is a large building from the 16th century in Cernobbio on Lake Como, now functioning as a luxury hotel. It features high ceilings, ornate stone facades, and is surrounded by terraced gardens with fountains, statues, and mature trees that frame views of the lake.
The villa was built in the 16th century as a summer residence for Cardinal Gallio and was later home to various noble families. In the 19th century, Queen Caroline of Brunswick resided there and reshaped the gardens in the English landscape style.
The name Villa d'Este recalls the famous villa in Tivoli near Rome, reflecting the wealth and aspirations of its former owners. Guests today can still see how the gardens and interior spaces were designed for leisure and social gatherings by the lake.
The hotel sits directly on the lake shore and welcomes overnight guests, while the gardens may be accessible during certain events or visiting times. Spring through fall offers the best experience, when flowers bloom and fountains run, making walks through the grounds more rewarding.
The property has long hosted the Concorso d'Eleganza, a renowned car show featuring rare and contemporary vehicles on its grounds. It also features a floating pool set directly on the water, a distinctive amenity that sets it apart from other lakeside hotels.
