Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, is a large beachfront hotel in Wailea-Makena, on the southwestern coast of Maui, Hawaii. The grounds cover several buildings connected by garden paths, with waterfalls, multiple pools, and a stretch of sandy beach at the edge of the property.
The resort opened in 1991 as a large new development built specifically for the growing tourism market on Maui's southern coast. It was later added to the Waldorf Astoria collection, joining a group of hotels operated under that international brand.
The resort displays a large collection of art throughout its grounds, including sculptures and murals inspired by Hawaiian culture. Guests walking between the pools and gardens pass these works without seeking them out, as they are woven into the layout of the property.
The property is large and mostly walkable, with clear paths between buildings, gardens, and the beach, though some routes slope downhill toward the water. On-site parking is available, and non-staying visitors have limited access to the grounds.
The Grotto Pool system at the resort is a series of connected pools with slides and water features that functions more like a water park than a standard hotel pool area. It spans several levels and links different parts of the outdoor grounds.
