Kamaole III Beach, Public beach in Kihei, Maui, United States
Kamaole III Beach is a public sandy beach on the south end of Kihei, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, backed by a wide open lawn shaded by coconut palms. It is the third and largest of three connected beach sections, all known locally as the Kamaole beaches.
The Kihei coastline was used for military purposes during World War II and was later returned to public use. As the town grew rapidly from the 1970s onward, the beach became a central gathering place for the expanding local community.
The grassy area behind the sand is regularly used for family picnics, birthday gatherings, and casual outdoor meals, making this beach a social space as much as a swimming spot. On weekends, the lawn fills with groups of people sharing food and spending time together in the open air.
The beach offers free parking, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguard coverage. Arriving early in the morning gives you more space and calmer water before the midday crowds show up.
The elevated lawn behind the sand sits high enough to give a clear sightline over the water, making it one of the better spots on the island to watch humpback whales from shore during winter. No boat trip is needed, just a good position on the grass and some patience.
