Zaatar
Zaatar is a Lebanese restaurant in Coburg serving Middle Eastern dishes from early morning until evening. The space seats about 85 people with a large communal table decorated in colorful Moroccan tiles, creating a bright and welcoming setting.
The original business started as a bakery run by the sons of Chafic Choueiri, founder of the well-known A1 shop in Brunswick. Brothers Charlie and Jeff Elrahi acquired the restaurant in 2015 and maintained its authentic character and warm community feel.
The name comes from the zaatar spice blend of thyme, sesame, oregano, and sumac, which is common across the Levant. The owners have preserved this tradition, offering guests authentic recipes passed down through generations of their family.
Visitors can choose between dining in or taking food home, with options for quick snacks or more relaxed meals. The restaurant also offers items like bread, pies, and dips available for takeout to share with others.
A favorite snack is the Zoccacia, a large toasted sandwich filled with Turkish sausage, halloumi, kofte, or cured beef. The menu also combines local favorites like Vegemite and halloumi in a pie, blending Middle Eastern and Australian tastes.
