City of Merri-bek

The City of Merri-bek is a municipal authority in northern Melbourne that encompasses multiple suburbs including Brunswick, Coburg, and Fawkner. The area operates five library branches and delivers services ranging from waste management to maternal health programs and youth services.

The area was established in 1994 through the merger of the former municipalities of Brunswick, Coburg, and southern Broadmeadows. The name change from Moreland to Merri-bek in 2022 marked a significant shift in recognizing and representing the district's identity.

Sydney Road comes alive with street festivals where the community gathers and local artists display their work throughout the year. The Counihan Gallery at Brunswick Town Hall serves as a hub for contemporary art exhibitions that shape the area's creative identity.

The district is easily accessible by public transport and offers good pedestrian pathways connecting different neighborhoods. The five libraries serve as central gathering points with extended hours and free access to local resources.

The area was an early adopter of sustainable transport infrastructure, installing one of Victoria's first fast charging stations for electric vehicles in 2013. This demonstrates a long-standing commitment to environmentally conscious transportation solutions across the region.
