Kolugljúfur

Kolugljúfur, Natural canyon in northern Iceland.

Kolugljúfur is a canyon in northern Iceland that stretches roughly one kilometer and features seven waterfalls cascading over steep rocky walls. The walls reach depths of around 50 meters (164 feet), creating a deep ravine carved by the Víðidalsá river over thousands of years.

The canyon formed over millions of years as the Víðidalsá river carved through the bedrock, creating the deep ravines visible today. This slow erosion process shaped the landscape into the layered terrain and cascading waterfalls that define the place.

The name comes from a local legend about a giantess called Kola who would fish for salmon at the canyon's edge. This tale remains alive in the region today and shapes how people connect with the place.

Two observation platforms near the parking area provide clear views of the waterfalls and canyon. These spots are easy to reach and offer different perspectives of the gorge from safe vantage points.

A rock formation on the western edge called Kolurúm is described in local stories as the sleeping place of the giantess Kola. This natural feature connects the physical landscape with regional folklore in a way many visitors overlook.
