Surtshellir

Surtshellir is a lava tube in western Iceland that forms a complex system of underground passages through the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The main entrance leads into these passages, allowing visitors to explore the subterranean landscape.

The cave formed from massive volcanic eruptions around 930 AD, during Iceland's early settlement period. This period shaped the geological landscape that visitors see today.

The name comes from Norse mythology and refers to the giant Surtr, who would use his flaming sword to bring about the end of the world. This powerful name reflects the dramatic volcanic nature of the place.

Visitors should bring proper equipment like helmets and headlamps, as the passages are dark and uneven. Exploring the main sections typically takes several hours and requires some physical preparation.

Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of Viking Age rituals, including animal bones and artifacts from the pre-Christian period. These findings show that the cave held special significance for early Icelandic settlers.
