Surtshellir

The main entrance of Surtshellir leads into a complex system of underground passages extending nearly 2 kilometers through the Hallmundarhraun lava field.

The cave formation dates back to massive volcanic eruptions around 930 AD, during the early settlement period of Iceland's recorded history.

The name Surtshellir comes from Norse mythology, referring to the giant Surtr who would use his flaming sword to bring about the end of the world.

Visitors need proper equipment including helmets and headlamps to navigate the cave system, and should plan for a 2-3 hour exploration of the main sections.

Archaeological discoveries within Surtshellir revealed evidence of Viking Age rituals, including animal bones and artifacts from the pre-Christian period of Iceland.
