Holtavörðuheiði, Mountain heath and weather station in Northwestern Iceland.
Holtavörðuheiði is a mountain heath in northwestern Iceland located between the Norðurárdalur and Hrútafjörður regions. The landscape consists of rolling hills with sparse vegetation and open terrain typical of highland plateau areas.
An automatic weather station was established at the site in 1995 to monitor atmospheric conditions. Since then, it has continuously recorded meteorological data from this highland region.
Local communities integrate data from the weather station into their daily routines, using it for agricultural planning and outdoor activity scheduling.
The area is accessible by roads that cross the highland region. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and bring supplies, as facilities are limited in this open moorland.
During winter, the location experiences extremely short daylight periods, with sunrise at 10:49 AM and sunset at 3:37 PM.
