Jardim Botânico do Porto

The Botanical Garden of Porto spans four hectares with formal gardens divided by century-old camellia hedges into distinct sections. The site also houses the Natural History Museum and Science Museum of the University of Porto across three elevation levels.

The garden began in the 19th century on the grounds of the former Royal College of Nobles to support botany and agriculture teaching. This royal heritage shaped the formal layout and scientific mission that persists today.

The Casa Andresen building on the grounds housed the 20th-century writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, linking this place to Portuguese literary circles. Visitors can sense how the garden served as both a working botanical space and a creative retreat for the city's intellectual community.

The gardens can be explored independently or with guided tours, with multiple entrances providing access throughout the site. Plan for separate time to visit both the garden grounds and the museum sections, as they function as distinct areas within the complex.

The site houses specialized sections like a Cactus Garden and a lake at the lowest level, areas often overlooked by visitors passing through. These lesser-known parts showcase the range of plant collections while providing quieter spots for observation.
