Jardim Botânico do Porto, Botanical garden in Lordelo do Ouro, Portugal

The Jardim Botânico do Porto is a botanical garden arranged across three levels, connecting formal gardens, greenhouses, an arboretum, and a lake through pathways. The space combines open planted areas with shaded woodland sections, housing both rare specimens and native plants in different environments.

The site developed as a private estate in the late 1800s before transitioning to university management in 1951, marking the shift from family property to public botanical institution. This change in stewardship brought expanded access and the garden's formal educational mission.

The garden served as a private sanctuary for the Andresen family across generations, shaping how members of this household experienced nature daily. Today, visitors still move through the space with a sense of stepping into someone's cherished personal retreat.

The garden covers a large area with varying elevations, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore different sections fully. Visitors will find pathways of different difficulty levels, from flat routes to gently sloped areas, depending on which parts they wish to visit.

Intertwined J-shaped hedges honor the initials of João and Joana Andresen, the founding couple, creating a living monogram across the grounds. These plantings stand alongside centuries-old camellia trees, revealing how long the site has drawn collectors and plant enthusiasts.
