Farol Cabo Sardão, Coastal lighthouse in Alentejo, Portugal
Farol Cabo Sardão is a lighthouse on Portugal's Alentejo coast standing on a cliff edge at approximately 68 meters above sea level. The quadrangular masonry tower features a cylindrical red lantern and is surrounded by symmetrical support buildings.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1915, replacing an earlier watchtower known as Castelo do Cavaleiro. Its establishment represented a modernization of navigation safety along the Portuguese coast.
The lighthouse follows architectural patterns common to 19th-century Portuguese coastal stations, with symmetrical buildings arranged around a central tower. Traditional ceramic tiles decorate the structures, reflecting regional craftsmanship that visitors can see throughout Alentejo's coastal areas.
The site sits on a cliff edge with open views of the coastline and ocean, and visitors can reach it on foot with a short walk from nearby parking. The terrain is natural and uneven, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
White storks build their nests on the cliffs beneath the lighthouse, an exceptionally rare nesting behavior for these birds on European seaside rocks. This unusual occurrence makes the location noteworthy for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
