Big Lagoon, Limestone lagoon in El Nido, Philippines
Big Lagoon is a natural pool with clear turquoise water surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs that rise straight from the ocean. The enclosed basin has varying water depths that shift the color from bright emerald to darker blue, with small islands and rock formations dotting the interior.
The limestone cliffs formed millions of years ago through geological processes and were slowly shaped by erosion into their current forms. These natural structures defined the bay's character and created the conditions that drew people to settle in the area over time.
Local fishing families have relied on these sheltered waters for shelter and livelihood for many generations. The lagoon remains woven into the daily rhythms and survival of nearby communities.
The best way to reach here is by boat from El Nido town, with tours typically booked in advance from local operators. Bring sun protection and water since the journey can last several hours with limited shelter on the boat.
The entrance to the lagoon is remarkably narrow and suddenly opens into a vast water basin beyond. This sudden shift in space surprises many visitors as their boat passes through the tight passage into the expansive interior.
