Descours castle

Descours castle is a ruin located near Merlas in southwestern France, sitting among vegetation and woodland. The stone foundations and partial walls show traces of earlier construction and modifications from different periods.

The site was built as a castle in the late 1800s and became a focal point for the local area. German forces destroyed it in June 1944 while attacking the French resistance fighters who had established a base there.

The ruins carry stories of those who fought for freedom during World War II and used this place as a sanctuary. Locals speak of the bravery shown here, making it a place of quiet reflection for visitors today.

The site is reachable on foot from Merlas village, with parking spots near the main road. The paths to the ruins can be muddy and overgrown, so sturdy shoes and careful footing are important.

Few visitors know that two resistance members were executed nearby in Nouvelière following the German attack on this place. This tragic event remains part of the local memory and marks the human cost of the conflict.
