Pyrénées Animal Park, zoo in Argelès-Gazost, France
Pyrénées Animal Park is a 14-hectare reserve with paths winding through hilly terrain where visitors observe regional animals such as marmots, otters, brown bears, and wolves. The animals live in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats.
The park opened in 1999 on land that was formerly a dairy farm belonging to the Mounard family, converting agricultural fields into a wildlife space. This transformation marked a new chapter for the property.
Information panels throughout the park help visitors learn about local animals and their habits in the region. A museum housed in a 19th-century stable displays wildlife exhibits from Europe and Africa.
The best time to visit is from April through October when the park operates with extended hours. Plan for several hours to walk the paths at a relaxed pace and observe the animals.
The park displays an updated map showing the locations of around 25 wild bears that roam freely in the Pyrenees. This gives visitors insight into the actual presence of these animals in the surrounding region.
