Cala del Gesso, Sandy beach in Monte Argentario, Italy

Cala del Gesso is a sandy beach in Monte Argentario with clear Mediterranean waters sheltered by limestone cliffs. The shoreline features fine sand and is bordered by steep rocky formations covered in typical Mediterranean plants.

A tower built in the 15th century overlooks the beach as part of a coastal defense system protecting the peninsula from sea raids. This structure marks an important period when these shores needed protection from maritime threats.

The name comes from gypsum found in the limestone cliffs that line the shore, giving the beach its pale appearance. This geological feature shapes how the place looks and feels to those who walk along it.

Access requires a walk down a steep path from the parking area, which takes most visitors about an hour to complete, so wear proper shoes and bring water. Starting early in the day gives you plenty of time for both the descent and return walk without rushing.

The beach sits across from the small Argentarola island, which creates sheltered, shallow waters ideal for snorkeling at various depths. This positioning naturally protects the cove from waves and makes underwater exploration rewarding for visitors.
