Torre di Capo d'Uomo, Medieval coastal tower in Monte Argentario, Italy.
Torre di Capo d'Uomo is a defensive tower perched 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level on the western side of Monte Argentario. The structure features a square stone base with thick walls that command views of the Tyrrhenian Sea below.
The Aldobrandeschi family built this defensive tower in the 15th century to protect their coastal holdings. When Siena later took control of the territory, the structure became integrated into a broader network of regional fortifications.
The tower functioned as a watchtower for the community below, helping residents stay informed about threats from pirates and foreign vessels approaching the coast. Its role as a communication hub made it vital to everyday safety in this remote coastal region.
The ruins sit along the scenic coastal road on the western side of Monte Argentario between Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. The path has some steep sections, so wearing sturdy shoes helps when exploring the ruins and surrounding area.
On clear days, visitors can see not just the nearby islands of Giglio and Giannutri but also Corsica far off on the horizon from this vantage point. This expansive view explains why the tower was so valuable for watching over the sea.
