Sea Life Aquarium, Public aquarium in Herrenhausen-Stöcken, Hannover, Germany
Sea Life Aquarium is a public display facility in Hannover-Herrenhausen that presents more than 2500 marine animals in around forty tanks. Sharks, rays, sea turtles and fish from tropical waters swim behind thick glass panels and in open basins filled with artificial saltwater.
The center opened its doors in 1979 and brought northern Germany a professionally run display aquarium focused on ocean conservation. The facility has been rebuilt and expanded several times to show new species and habitats.
The name reflects a network of centers dedicated to bringing ocean life closer to people and raising awareness about marine conservation. School classes regularly visit the building to help children understand how coral reefs and other habitats function in nature.
Visitors can book entrance tickets for fixed time slots on the internet to avoid waiting at the entrance. The building is easily reached by local transport and offers barrier-free access for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs.
A glass tunnel runs through a large tank holding 300000 liters of water, so sharks and rays swim directly above the heads of visitors. The animals appear especially close from this perspective and can be observed from below.
