Plage des Grands Sables, Coastal beach on Groix Island, France
Grands Sables beach stretches along the northeastern coast of Groix Island, displaying a striking mix of white and reddish sand near the waterline. The sandy formation creates the beach's distinctive shape along this section of the island.
From 1981 to 2004, maritime currents and prevailing winds shifted the beach westward by approximately 450 meters. This movement changed where the beach is located on the island.
The beach is tied to the island's fishing heritage, as local fishermen land their catch here and fresh seafood from these waters appears in nearby restaurants.
Access is by marked coastal path from Port-Tudy harbor, with bicycle rentals available to explore the island. Plan time to walk different sections of the coast at your own pace.
This beach has an unusual convex shape that curves outward toward the sea rather than inward, making it geographically rare in Europe. Few beaches elsewhere have this distinctive seaward bulge.
