Nõmme Market, Marketplace in Nõmme district, Tallinn, Estonia
Nõmme Market is an open-air marketplace in the Nõmme district of Tallinn, where stalls run by Estonian growers sell vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, and fish throughout the year. In spring and summer, flower and plant vendors take up a large part of the space and draw a noticeably different crowd of shoppers.
The market was founded in 1908 after the local authorities of the time granted permission to open a trading post for the growing settlement of Nõmme. The surrounding neighborhood has changed considerably since then, but the market has held its place as a local supply point without interruption.
The market has the feel of a village square, where sellers from the Nõmme area set up alongside gardeners selling surplus produce from their own plots. Regulars greet the same vendors week after week, giving the place a familiar, neighborhood rhythm.
Going early in the morning gives the best choice of produce before vendors start packing down. The market sits close to the Nõmme train station, making it easy to reach from the city center without a car.
A few small cafes inside the market bake pastries on the spot, so it is possible to stop for a coffee and something fresh from the oven without leaving the market grounds. Many visitors end up spending more time than planned because of this.
