Belmont Wetlands State Park, Nature reserve in Newcastle-Maitland, Australia

Belmont Wetlands State Park is a nature reserve along the coast near Newcastle that features extensive wetlands, coastal dunes, and heathland spread across a large area. The landscape includes a network of lagoons and open water bodies surrounded by heath and coastal vegetation.

The site was transformed from a former mining area into a protected reserve in 2006, marking an early conservation achievement in New South Wales. Community-led restoration efforts made this transition possible and established the foundation for ongoing habitat recovery.

Local volunteers from Friends of Belmont Wetlands Landcare maintain the reserve by planting native species and conducting regular waste management activities.

The park is open daily and provides walking trails, viewing points, and areas for outdoor activities throughout the reserve. Visitors can access well-marked paths through different habitats that suit various fitness levels.

The area hosts several rare and threatened species that have disappeared from other parts of the region. The seven separate coastal wetland systems combine to form the largest single open water wetland in the wider area and attract migratory birds from great distances.
