Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot, Locomotive depot in Broadmeadow, Australia.
Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot is a railway maintenance facility on a large site in New South Wales. The complex contains two roundhouse buildings with turntables for servicing and storing locomotives alongside the Main Northern railway line.
The facility opened in 1924 and replaced earlier locomotive sheds elsewhere. It operated as one of New South Wales' major rail maintenance centers until 1994.
The site shows how Australian railway technology evolved and shaped the local community over many decades. Visitors can observe how the shift from steam to diesel locomotives is reflected in the buildings and infrastructure throughout the complex.
The site is extensive and best explored with some guidance about what to see. Access and visitor facilities are managed by Transport Heritage NSW.
The facility preserves two original turntables from 1924, with one still working to rotate locomotives. This historic rotating mechanism remains in occasional use today.
