The Muster Point

The Muster Point is a steel and bronze installation on Industrial Drive in Mayfield that spans multiple zones. The memorial features walk-through gates that visitors can navigate, creating an interactive experience within the sculpture.

The memorial was built in 1999 to honor the Newcastle Steelworks of BHP, which operated for 84 years. The site marks the industrial heritage of the region and the workforce that sustained it.

The memorial was created through collaboration between artist Julie Squires and BHP workers in the Fabrication Shop before the plant closed. The structure reflects the hands-on connection between artist and industrial workers from that era.

The memorial's walk-through gates are normally locked but can be opened during designated visiting hours. Check ahead to ensure access during the scheduled times when the gates are available for visitors.

The 70-tonne memorial was built on land that was originally part of the steelworks and was selected for its proximity to coal deposits. This placement directly connects the monument to the raw materials that powered the industry.
