Opening in 1876, the Victoria Theatre underwent complete reconstruction in 1890, emerging as the oldest surviving theatre building in New South Wales.
The theatre transformed from stage performances to cinema screenings in 1921, presenting films like Gone With The Wind while maintaining space for live shows.
Located at 8-10 Perkins Street, the theatre receives $4.1 million in government funding for restoration works aimed at reopening within 24 months.
Researchers created a virtual reality recreation of the theatre's historical interior in 2018, allowing visitors to experience its original 19th-century layout.
