Great Northern Hotel, Newcastle, Heritage hotel in Newcastle, Australia
The Great Northern Hotel is a six-story Art Deco structure with a central wing and two side wings located at 89 Scott Street in Newcastle. The ground floor contains a restaurant serving meals daily from midday and a sports bar with TAB facilities, pool tables, and large screens for viewing sporting events.
The building opened in 1938 as the third establishment bearing this name to operate at the same location, designed by Sydney architects Rudder and Grout and built by Kell & Rigby. Two earlier structures had previously stood on this site.
The venue functions as a gathering place in Newcastle's east end, where local musicians perform regularly and community members meet for weekly trivia events. Visitors experience how the space brings people together.
The dining and bar areas on the ground floor are accessible and straightforward to navigate, making it easy to stop by for a meal or drinks. Visitors can drop in during daytime hours to enjoy the spaces without advance planning needed.
A 2018 renovation project included plans for a new swimming pool that would extend across Scott Street. This expansion would have merged a contemporary amenity with the historic structure.
