Newcastle Civic Theatre, Art Deco theatre in Newcastle, Australia.

Newcastle Civic Theatre is an Art Deco performance venue built in the late 1920s in the heart of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It features a marble staircase, terrazzo flooring, ornamental wall treatments, and classical ceiling designs throughout its interior.

The building opened as a cinema in 1929 and quickly became one of the main entertainment destinations in the city. By the 1970s it had shifted to live theatre as audiences moved away from cinema-going and demand for stage productions grew.

The Newcastle Civic Theatre is known locally as a place where live music, musicals, and drama all share the same stage across the year. Audiences from the wider Hunter region come here regularly, making it a central point in the local arts calendar.

The theatre sits in central Newcastle and is easy to reach on foot from nearby transport stops and the city centre. It is worth checking in advance whether a show is scheduled, as the building is not always open to the public outside of performances.

The outside of the building has a restrained Georgian-style appearance that gives little hint of what is inside. Once through the doors, visitors find Mediterranean and Moorish decorative details that feel like a completely different world from the street-facing facade.
