Mekkerland

Mekkerland is a petting zoo in Mariakerke near Gent that houses goats, sheep, chickens, and rabbits in protected pastures. The animals live here without being used for milking or slaughter.

This meeting farm was founded to create connections between people and animals through direct interactions. That founding principle continues to guide how the place operates today.

Children experience animal care and farm life directly through hands-on activities at this location. Visitors share moments together, such as preparing meals in the outdoor play kitchen.

This location welcomes visitors from late April through September on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 14:00 and 18:00. Entry is through the garden area of the Zuiderlicht nursing home.

The animals here have protected rest areas within their pastures where they can stay undisturbed by visitors. This separation ensures their wellbeing is not compromised by too much human contact.
