Зоопарк Хисарлъка

Hisarlaka Zoo is an animal facility located in the forest park of the same name at the edge of Kyustendil, with enclosures for native Bulgarian wildlife and various bird species. The structures are spread across the wooded grounds and allow viewing of animals in natural settings.

The facility was founded in 1962 as a small animal collection in the Doctor Dzhanki area and moved to its current location in Hisarlaka Forest Park in 1966. This relocation allowed for the creation of a larger and more natural setting for the animals.

The zoo operates as a learning hub where local schoolchildren take part in programs about wildlife protection and animal behavior. Visitors can see how the facility actively contributes to environmental education in the community.

The zoo is located near a medieval fortress and offers free admission with more than 15 enclosures spread across the grounds. The wooded terrain requires good footwear and time to explore all areas thoroughly.

The zoo shares its location with an ancient fortress, so visitors can see historical architecture while observing animals. This combination is unusual for a small-town facility and adds an extra layer to the visit.
