Quinta das Palmeiras
Quinta das Palmeiras is a small zoo and botanical garden in Porto Santo covering just over 5,000 square meters. It displays various palm trees, hibiscus, roses and other plants alongside free-roaming birds such as parrots, pigeons and swans, plus turtles, fish and ostriches.
The site was developed by Carlos Afonso, who spent over 15 years transforming a dry area into a green garden. It first opened to the public in 1993.
The name comes from the many palm trees that define the landscape and give it a tropical look. Visitors can see how plants and animals coexist in a relaxed, nature-focused setting that feels like a local family project rather than a formal institution.
The site is best reached by car via Estrada das Pedras Vermelhas with parking available at the entrance. A visit typically takes about 30 minutes and going early in the day or right after lunch helps you enjoy the space without crowds.
Peacocks roam freely across the grounds without bothering visitors, adding a colorful touch to the park experience. A small cafe sits on an elevated terrace overlooking the lush greenery and distant mountains of Porto Santo with ocean views beyond.
