Pico do Castelo

Pico do Castelo is a 437-meter mountain peak on Porto Santo Island that commands views over Vila Baleira, the bay, and surrounding islets. The hillside is now covered with planted vegetation that has transformed the landscape over many decades.

A 16th-century fortress was built on the peak to defend island residents against French pirate raids during the colonial period. Remnants of this fortification remain visible in different locations today.

The summit displays a commemorative bust of a local figure who led reforestation efforts on the previously barren hillside. This monument reflects the community's connection to transforming the landscape through systematic tree planting.

The summit can be reached by car or along marked hiking trails starting from the Camacha area, with routes ranging from 3 to 5 kilometers. The paths vary in difficulty, so visitors should choose a route that matches their fitness level.

Ancient cannons remain positioned at strategic points around the summit, relics from the island's maritime defense era. These weapons illustrate the practical protection residents built over centuries.
