Pino de las dos Pernadas, Tree in Vilaflor, Tenerife, Spain

The Pino de las Dos Pernadas is a Canary Island pine tree growing in the highlands of Vilaflor, in an area called Lomo Gordo, on Tenerife. The tree has a slender but very tall trunk that splits into two large branches, giving it a shape unlike any other pine in the area.

The tree is believed to have been growing for around 500 years, which means it was already alive before the Spanish settled Tenerife. It has survived centuries of harsh mountain winters and occasional volcanic ash without being cut or disturbed.

The two large branches that give the tree its name start splitting apart at about 13 feet (4 meters) above the ground and then grow upward separately. This shape makes the tree easy to recognize at first glance as you approach it.

The tree stands along a local road and is easy to reach by car, with parking nearby and a short walk to the foot of the tree. Weekdays tend to be quieter, which makes it easier to take in the surroundings without crowds.

Although the tree is known for its height, its trunk is much slimmer than that of the nearby Pino Gordo, which holds the record for the thickest pine trunk in Spain. The two trees stand roughly 150 meters apart and together form an unusual pair worth seeing on the same visit.
